PHILAGRAFIKA 2010 Review

What Is Printmaking Today? Philadelphia Dares to Ask, by Ken Johnson on February 5, 2010, "“Philagrafika 2010,” a citywide festival devoted to the print in contemporary art, includes exhibitions in almost 90 galleries and works by more than 300 artists."

I love how rubber stamps are mentioned in the first paragraph. Some of us are still using them. At least I am, as well as other low-tech materials.

The 7th International Fiber Biennial at the Snyderman-Works Gallery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from February 5 - March 20, 2010, is a part of Philagrafika 2010. Read more about it in my post from yesterday.

Published Review

I wrote a review that's in the Surface Design Journal's Winter 2010 issue. It's about Elin Noble's show "Layered Affinities, Quilts and Hand-dyed Cloth," that was on exhibit at the Narrows Gallery in Fall River, MA from March 6 - May 2, 2009.

The Surface Design Journal is a really beautiful and smart magazine, which I encourage you to read, not only because the review I wrote is in it. The Winter 2010 issue has many articles about felt, which is one of my favorites mediums. A must read for fiber lovers!

Off the Fence - Last Week and Review

I wanted to remind anyone who is planning on visiting my solo show Off the Fence at the Hunt Cavanagh Gallery at Providence College in Providence RI, that it closes on December 4th. Pictures of the show will remain on my website.

Review

My solo show has been reviewed in "Gang of four: New work at 5 Traverse and Providence College," in the Providence Phoenix, by Greg Cook on November 3, 2009.

This is my first solo show review by an art critic and I am thankful for it. Past reviews that mentioned me have mainly been about my work in groups shows in a textile related periodical, and a (now deceased) Boston area Arts newspaper.

The comments in the review are very helpful in making me think about what direction to take my work. The fact that the reviewer liked the piece I cut up (as do I) is also very helpful feedback. I have been thinking about cutting into more work, and also about whether or not I want to keep "quilting" my work or if I want to simply stitch it and hang the fabric somehow, or mount it on board or canvas.

In March I will be in a two-person show at the Narrows Gallery in Fall River, MA with Catherine Carter. I feel challenged to consider the reviewers comments as I plan and create work for that show, all while keeping true to myself and my art.
