New Work: Wordle: Painted

In January of 2025, I exhibited paintings I created from the results from my playing Wordle. Later that year, I learned that the NY Times offered people the ability to create their own Wordles with 4-7 characters and they can share their puzzle with others to complete.

I created a 7-letter puzzle, and I challenged my friends on social media to play it, and whether they were successful or not, to screenshot your results and email them to me.

This painting has the results of 24 completed puzzles from my custom 7 character word. The puzzles are grouped in fours, painted in narrow vertical stripes, in six sections, two across and three tall.

The fours patterns and colors (not the letters) in each square are painted in the grid of a monoprinted and stitched construction fence pattern, with collaged pieces of an antique crossstitched embroidery. The fabric is stiffened so it appears more like paper than fabric.

Wordle: Painted is mixed media on stiffened fabric that measures 26.75” x 29.25".

More New Work in Progress: Custom Wordle Project Painting

New work in progress: It’s snowing lightly and I’m procrastinating working on my MIL’s taxes, so I glued down the pieces of vintage embroideries on my new Wordle painting about my custom 7 character word that represents the results from the answers from 24 people who took the challenge of trying to solve it. Next up, taxes, and also painting some lines between the six sections, probably with black but possibly not.

More New Work in Progress: Third Group in Custom Wordle Project

It was a busy and fun weekend and I'm glad that I did get to finish painting the third batch of 4 puzzles results from my custom 7 character word for my new Wordle painting. There are three more batches of 4 puzzle results to do, hopefully when I am on vacation from work for 11 days starting mid-week, I will be able to do more. Most importantly, I will be working on two other paintings when I'm off, finishing my 2025 walking painting and starting to populate my 2026 painting.

More New Work in Progress: Third Group in Custom Wordle Project

I was able to do a little more work on my new Wordle painting after not being able to for a few weeks. I started the third batch of 4 puzzles with the results from my custom 7 character word. The first two groups are complete. I was glad to have the pencil lines ready so I could paint after work and a few errands this afternoon. I plan on doing more this weekend, and even more next week through the end of 2025, and I will also be working on a few other paintings as well.

New Work in Progress: Custom Wordle Project

I’m working on a new Wordle painting with the results of 24 completed puzzles from my custom 7 character word now that the NY Times lets users create their own puzzles from 5-7 letter words. Here is the first entry that I received. I’m grouping them in fours for a total of two wide and three tall. More pictures coming soon.

Try my Wordle!

In January of this year, I exhibited paintings I created from the results from my playing Wordle.
Yesterday I learned that people can create their own Wordles with 4-7 characters and share their puzzle with others.
I am challenging those of you who are interested, to play mine that has 7 letters, and after you do it, whether you are successful or not, to screenshot your results and email them to me at jeanne@jeannewilliamson.com. I hope to make a painting or paintings with the results I receive.
Have fun, and thank you.

Wordle Show Opening

I had a great time yesterday celebrating the opening of my Wordle paintings show at Storefront Art Projects at 83 Spring Street in Watertown, MA! The show is up through January 25, 2025, and the gallery hours are Thursdays and Saturdays from 1 - 4pm. It was absolutely wonderful meeting Tracy Bennett, the New York Times Wordle Editor, at the opening, and seeing old friends and making new friends! Thank you to everyone, especially Ellen at Storefront Art Projects for inviting me to exhibit, to Tracy for coming to Watertown from out of state, and to my sweetheart for being so supportive while I made the 18 pieces in the show over the past few months! And it was totally a coincidence that Tracy and I were both wearing dots (as you can see us standing by my painting with dots).

Small Wordle Paintings

As I prepare to hang my Wordle paintings for a show at a nearby gallery, I am taking time to do last minute details. Here are nine 6" x 6" paintings drying on a drop cloth after I painted the edges of the boards white. I sort of like the combined chaos of the grids and what can be seen on the drop cloth underneath.

New Work: Mauve

New work in my Wordle series: Mauve.

The colors in the grid represent the results of six of my completed Wordle puzzles, finished in the six rows or less.

The dates of the puzzles are December 1, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 2024.

The words those days were: Mauve, Crypt, Shove, Hilly, Flung, and Patio.

Mauve is mixed media on board and measures 6" x 6".

New Work in Progress

I’m working as many 6”x6” Wordle themed paintings as I can make start to finish, or start, this weekend. Sometimes I need blue painters tape to help keep me within the size and format so I don’t screw up.

New Work: Brown

The Xs (not the letters) in the squares are from the results of my finished Wordle puzzle on November 25, 2024, handstamped on a corner of a very large appliquéd tablecloth that was gifted to me. The word that day was Brown.

Brown is mixed media on fabric and it measures 11” x 15.5”.

New Work: Sometimes Right, Sometimes Wrong

Sometimes Right, Sometimes Wrong is about being successful (or not) on the sixth row of Wordle. I’m guessing not many people would share when they didn’t get a correct answer, but for me, it’s all about patterns no matter which way it turned out.

The dates of the puzzles are from July 19, August 12, 17, 23, September 1, 6, 7, 27, October 5, 6, 11, 15*, 19*, 23, 24*, 25, 28, November 2, 3, and 10*. The words those days were: Refer, Skiff, Storm, Leech, Mushy, Rerun, Owner, Beaut, Miner, Lager, Gusty, (Corer), (Fiber), Goofy, (Bossy), Frown, Bawdy, Snoop, Blaze, and (Inner).

* The words in parentheses are the correct answers on the days I didn’t answer correctly.

Sometimes Right, Sometimes Wrong is mixed media on fabric, and measures 26” x 27”.

New Work in my Wordle Series

I finished these two Wordle themed paintings a few months ago but forgot to post them.

I monoprinted a gridded construction fence pattern on the back side of two different upcycled antique embroidered hand cloth knowing that the grey paint from the grid would soak through to the front. The Xs are handstamped rubber erasers.

The above painting is entitled Force, Bevel, Quite, Storm. The Xs in each square are from the results of four finished Wordle puzzles on Mar 30, May 26, Jul 17, Aug 17 2024. It measures 10.25" x 18".

The painting below is Finch, Manga, Refer, Skiff. The Xs in each square are from the results of four finished Wordle puzzles on Apr 6, Jun 10, Jul 19, Aug 12, 2024. It measures 10.25" x 18.25".

More New Work in Progress

After being away for Thanksgiving, I had an extra day off yesterday and some added time tonight after dinner, to highlight the squares that had the correct letters for 20 Wordle puzzles. This painting is about being successful (or not) on the sixth row of Wordle. I’m guessing not many people would share when they didn’t get a correct answer, but for me, it’s all about patterns no matter which way it turned out.
