Rubberband Ball

I was away for two weeks. Back at home I noticed some changes to my family's rubberband ball. This is a picture taken a few days ago. To see past pictures,

I'm catching up on paying bills, work work, and etc. When I conquer my "to do" list, I'll start sewing the four pieces I painted while away. Also, August starts tomorrow, so I need to start thinking about my August "12 x 12 x 12" piece.

Construction Fence Wanna Be

This fabric fence was found at the ferry that goes between Martha's Vineyard and Wood's Hole (in Massachusetts). I had to take a picture of it since it looks so much like a construction fence. Too bad I wasn't able to get a piece of it to add to my collection.

Printing/Painting on Fabric

I finished the second of two pieces of Natick Mall fabric. The black/white edge needed highlighting to make it stronger.

Here is what the front of the fabric looked like before I highlighted it with grey paint:

and here is the same side highlighted:

This is the back of the same piece of fabric before highlighting:

and the here it is afterward:

The next step is to stitch both pieces of fabric as soon as I can, and then see if they have any sections that need to be reworked with thread or paint. Hopefully in the next week or so I can start sewing.

Printing/Painting on Fabric

Switching back and forth between projects, I have finished painting the first piece of Natick Mall fabric. I had originally wanted to have double ovals on this piece, similar to the double windows in the photo, but I didn't like it after I painted it that way. Here is a picture of the front of the fabric with the doubles. One is circled as an example:

and here is the same piece of fabric with the double ovals separated:

Looking at the back side of the same piece, one double oval is circled:

and here is the back of the same side of the fabric with the double oval separated:

I like both the front and back sides, so I'm going to need to think about which side I'm going to use face side out. I think closing the double ovals with the silver/gray fabric paint was the right decision.

Printing/Painting on Fabric

I'm halfway through painting the second of two pieces of fabric inspired by a photo I took of the condos being built at the Natick Mall. The first piece has some double ovals in the design. I decided I don't like it, so I decided the second piece would not have them. I've detailed both pieces of fabric, with the sections circled to explain what I'm talking about. The above image is of the second piece with the smaller ovals.

...and this is the first piece, with the double (larger) ovals. I am actually planning on splitting the large ovals in to two separate sections, but I'm going to use gray paint to do it, instead of the brownish paint in the other piece.

I'm hoping to finish both pieces in the next few days and I'll share more photos at that time.

Printing/Painting on Fabric

This is a really bad photo of the first piece of fabric I'm working on that is inspired by a photo I took of the condos being built at the Natick Mall, as I discussed on July 20th. The picture above shows the front side of the fabric on the left, and the back side on the right.

At the moment, I'm liking the back (right) side of this fabric more than the front. The front side is really dark, and the detail is really hard to see. The back side is more lace-like, and even if it has nothing to do with my inspirational photo, it's sort of interesting to me. I'm going to put this fabric aside for a short while, and start on the second piece in this series. I'm hoping to use what I learned in the first piece, while working on the second.

In the end, I'd like to have two new pieces, with one showing the fabric painted side, and the other with the wrong side of the fabric showing, but we'll see how this turns out. That was my plan with the last two piecesI finished, but I ended up with the back sides of the fabric as the finished work.

Printing/Painting on Fabric

I took this picture of the condos that are being built at the Natick Mall (in Natick MA where I live) a few months ago. I'm very inspired by the different colors and materials being used in the construction process, as well as the grid. As I was getting started on my first piece about this building, I used photoshop to tweak the colors, and at the time, I was convinced I was going to use that version.

Now that I'm working on it, I've decided that I don't want to use that version, but more of a combination of the two images. I'll post the work in progress as soon as there's something to show. While planning it out, I can see that I could easily do many more than the two I had planned on. I have many ideas for variations on this theme.

Printing/Painting on Fabric

I've got the two pieces of fabric I mentioned on July 12th, and July 3rd painted and ready for stitching. I've posted details of both pieces. The blue "tiles" in the upper left corner differ slightly.

I think I'm going to stitch one painted side face out, and the other back side out. I won't be able to stitch them for a few weeks I think, but I'll post more about them when I do it.

Printing/Painting on Fabric

For a change of pace (and place), I set up a temporary space in a friend's basement so I could paint fabric. It's a nice place to keep cool in the summer heat, while painting.

Construction Fence with Greenery

When ever I'm out and about, I always keep my eyes open for construction fences, and how they are being used. I stumbled upon this fence yesterday, when I was making a cell phone call before getting in my car. I was standing to the side of my son's old orthodontist's building, trying to use the building to block the noise of local traffic, when I turned around and saw this fence behind the building. Imagine my delight! I just got a new phone with a camera, so I was able to take a picture of it. In the past there have been many times I have seen images I wanted to take a picture of, but couldn't. Thank goodness for having a camera now.

I think this is the nicest fence I've ever seen, because of how the plants are growing around and through it. Very inspirational for possible future work.

Rubberband Ball

More on my family's rubberband ball, which is also a self destructing work of art. I noticed that there have been some more changes. Take a look at how it looked on: July 5th. The main change seems to be on the upper left side. The green rubber bands seem to be breaking quicker than the tan and other colored ones.

Printing/Painting on Fabric

I've been working on some new work, and two of the pieces are based on the above image from the NY Times Magazine, as I discussed on May 21st.

Above this a close-up of the what the fabric looks so far on the front side, and below is a close up of the back side of the same piece of the fabric.

The mosaic painting I did on July 3rd is also a part of these two new pieces. I'll show more as I progress.

12 x 12 x 12 July

I finished my July 12 x 12 x 12 piece. It is stitched following the lines of each "tile", and has a great texture that is not easy to pick up in a photo, but here's a detail that I hope shows it somewhat:

All my 12 x 12 x 12 pieces from 2007 (so far) can be seen on my website or the The Uncommon Quilter website.

I've been looking this piece off and on all weekend, and I have to say that I like it. I like the "color", the texture and that diagonal white space. There are some 12 x 12 x 12 pieces I've made this year, that I am not that happy with design wise, but that's OK. It's all part of the (artistic) growth process. And, I'm my own worst enemy in terms of liking/not liking some of my work. Even if there are pieces I don't like, other people might like it.

12 x 12 x 12 July - in progress

I've been enjoying the mosaic tiling I've been painting on some new pieces I'm working on, so I decided that my July 12 x 12 x 12 piece would be about that.

Before I started sewing it, I wanted to show the front and back sides of the same piece of fabric. The difference between both sides is subtle:

Rubberband Ball

About 10 years ago, my family and I started a rubberband ball. We didn't buy the rubber bands. The rubber bands came to us holding our mail together, or were used to hold plastic produce containers closed when we left the grocery store. The idea came to us from my father-in-law who had started his own for similar reasons.

We added rubberbands to our ball for about 8 years +/-, and stopped when it got too big to stretch new rubberbands across it. I think it measured about 7" tall when we stopped adding them. It was pretty heavy, and it was something that kids and adults loved to look at and hold because it was amazingly large. The ball usually just sat on a small table top, but every now and then, my son would take it outside and bounce it on the street, and watch how it went in weird directions because it hit a bump in the asphalt. It was very unpredictable.

For the past 2 years I've been watching the ball start to fall apart. I've been picking up the small pieces of rubberbands as they fall off of it, and thowing them away. In the past few weeks, the ball has been starting to look REALLY interesting. Some bands are breaking and others not, so I decided it was time (or maybe past the time?) to start documenting it.

The picture above was taken today. The ball is 6.75" tall now. I'm going to try to take pictures of it as it continues to change, and I'll post it on my blog. Creating this ball started out as a silly thing, that turned into a bit of a science experiment. Now it's still a science experiment but it's also a self destructing work of art.

Printing/Painting on Fabric

I have always liked blue glass mosaic tiles. A few weeks ago, we spent the weekend at a friend's house on Cape Cod. These tiles were used in a recently remodeled bathroom. I don't know if this influenced me or not, but I painted the small squares in the texture printed from the "Silver Hardware Net" (see my June 29th entry) as a mosaic pattern. Below is a picture of the front of the fabric:

and here is a picture of the back of the same fabric.

As I started this piece, my plan was to use the back of the fabric as the main image, but I really like the black printed lines between each painted blue "tile", so I might just keep the front the front. Time will tell.
